Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Oklahoma, USA

Oklahoma's oldest national park is the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (formerly known as the Chickasaw-Platt National Park) located in Southern Oklahoma, bordering Sulphur, Oklahoma.
The park is known for its nature trails, mineral water spring and recreation area. I have driven its scenic drives which are very pretty and fun. Veterans Lake is gorgeous. I noticed while visiting this lake, that there were many people with boats enjoying all the lake had to offer.
My dachshund loves walking on the easier nature trails, especially the ones with many trees. As long as the dog is leashed, the pet is permitted. There are trails for beginners, intermediate and advanced hikers. The numerous nature trails have some more adventurous and challenging than others like the longer trails for serious hiking. Each trail is a blast and a great way to experience nature.
In a special fenced in area, the National Park has a herd of buffalo. They have a Buffalo viewing section you can drive up to and enjoy at a distance watching these magnificent creatures. Recommend bringing a camera; worth taking their picture.
If you like to camp, there are several beautiful camping grounds. A camping fee is required. The fee goes toward each camp ground's maintenance in order to deliver a wholesome camping environment.
If you prefer picnics, there are many picnic areas. Some are closer to restrooms than others. There are picnic areas with barbecue pits for cooking food like hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, sausages or...... Each picnic area is easy to access. There are lots of shade trees and grass; a super family fun spot!
Chickasaw National Recreation Area is for all ages; great for families. This is the place for having a family reunion. Like us, many Sulphur and out of the area Oklahoma residents enjoy visiting the Chickasaw National Recreation Area often. Tourists from other states are welcome too. This is one gorgeous National Park you do not want to miss!

It sounds like a wonderful place to hike. A perfect family event day.
I have only glimpsed parts of this beautiful spot in southern Oklahoma while passing through Sulphur on day trips to Texas, but definitely want to go back and spend a day there. But even only passing through on the highway, one gets a sense of peace and serenity. Which now that I think about it is partly due to the fact that the speed limit drops to 20 mph. What can be seen from the highway is acres and acres of a park-like area under a thick canopy of trees. I'm guessing at the height of summer, the temp in the park is at least 20 degrees cooler than outside it!

Sounds beautiful. That one photo you added is gorgeous. I imagine your dashshund Fritz likes the shorter trails because of his little legs. LOL
